Sacha Beeley’s Babyface — Skillbard turns mosquito bites into dance

Sacha Beeley’s Babyface trades straightforward cues for tiny ruptures in reality; nowhere is that clearer than the mosquito→dance moment, where sound actively rewrites what the audience sees. Skillbard’s design takes the metallic ping of insects on Spoon’s head, stretches and harmonises it, then snaps the tempo into a buoyant groove. The result is a perspective flip: a nuisance becomes invitation, the film’s tone sliding from brittle to euphoric in a single rhythmic beat. That pivot makes the payoff both comic and quietly tender.

There is one moment, where the mosquitoes start trying to bite Spoon’s metal head, where I knew I wanted the metallic bites to transition into a song that Spoon starts dancing to. That was a nice moment of collaboration between music and animation as the reality shifts to this slight fantasy surreal moment.

That approach echoes Beeley’s earlier shorts: Big Toast (a Central Saint Martins graduation film that screened at the BFI London Film Festival in 2019) and the vignette Lucky Penny, where minimal gestures and unexpected audio choices enlarge solitary characters into fully felt oddballs. In Babyface Skillbard doesn’t merely accompany Beeley’s visuals; their sound design negotiates rhythm and scale, loosening temporal constraints so the animation can turn a private impulse into a communal, delirious moment.
